“Man is a social being”, this is a popular cliche that has come to be truth. We as humans aren’t created to live in isolation. The need to keep friends and have well wishers around us makes us human. As Christian we must always be careful whom we call friends. The scripture is clear on the role of friends, how their presence in people’s lives was either inimical to their success or contributory to their downfall. Friends are important but one must be able to sieve the type of company and friends one keep. This is where the spirit of discernment comes to play.

With a lot of things happening in today’s world, people try to keep friends in order to make them either feel among or feel wanted. This situation has warranted us to look at friendship as it regards to Christianity and how they associate and interact with people. We would look at various level of friends and categories of friendship that a Christian must be wary of or know of.

We would start looking at various types such as Gehazi group, Thomas group, Absalom group, Kora group et al.

The Thomas Group: these are the type of group. If we look at John 20: 24- 31 defined this this type of folks that you have friends would demonstrate the Thomas tendencies in them by not standing by you or even denying you as we saw in the case of Thomas. Thomas having known Jesus for who he was (is)  still doubted him when they told him that he has risen. These set of people would doubt your capacity to scale be it spiritually or physically.

The Judas Group: John 18: 1 -5 , these set of friends are those that would work with you but deep down in their minds they aren’t happy with the values and talents God has bestowed on you.  These folks would always talk ill of you behind you. We have seen this happen over time! These type of friends would or might appear nice to you but behind you, they have vinegar in their hearts.

The Judas Group: John 18: 1 – 5, these are the ones that appear nice, they would act as if they are in love with you but they are mostly schemers. They most time value financial and earthy thing more than friendships. These people can betray, sellout and usurp anything from friendships to relationship. Judas demonstrated this when he kissed Jesus and still sold him .

The Absalom Group: These can be found at 2nd Samuel 15: 1-12 , here Absalom was a son of David! He has the capacity to destroy just as Absalom did.

The Korah Group: Numbers 16 : 1 , these are the kind of friends that would always challenge your authority. These are the type of friends that have the capacity to undermine yours authority.

The Haram Group: Genesis 9: 20 – 27, these are the people that would expose our weakness! These types of friends would never hide your weaknesses and they are happy to expose it.

The Gehazi Group: 2nd Kings 5: 19 – 25, here these are the type of friends that would always go behind and take what shouldn’t have been theirs that is either meant for you or someone. They are mostly greedy but always show loyalty but that is a facade. Christians must be wary of this type also.

The Jezebel Groups: 1st King 19: 1 – 16 , this type of friends would look at ways to frustrate your efforts and ensure that nothing good comes out of your efforts. We must know that these kind of friends are daring and they mostly don’t care about feelings of the friends. They try to always undermine your efforts and possibly authority.

In line with the biblical injunction which said ”  A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother”,Proverbs 18:24. Also in the same book, we were advised to be cautious of friendship “A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray”, Proverbs 12:26.

Now we have to look at various categories and types of wrong friends and also the good ones.

The Harod Group:  Mark 6: 25 – 28, these type of friends are good at aborting your success. They rarely listen to sense of reason ! They act based on impulse not trying to evaluate things before they happen.

The scripture offers much guidance when it comes to choosing friends. God knows our desire to be known and to be loved! He made us for companionship. Read Bible passages about friendship and how if chosen right, our friends can be the greatest source of love, healing, joy, and encouragement.
