No country can get ahead if it leaves half of its people behind,” said the US Secretary of State, John Kerry.

It’s on this premise that women in Nigeria are on the move to bridge the ICT gap in the country. The ICT space in Nigeria has been a male dominated affair and with the level of women participation in the ecosystem, the narrative is changing and in a fast pace.

Over the weekend, in Uyo, a city known for oil and gas exploration, women in the city of Uyo had another intriguing Conference known as ‘WOMEN TECH MAKERS’ with theme: ‘Building a New Horizon’, which was in commemoration of International Women’s Day Celebration.

The event took place at @starthubtech located at Ibom e-Library in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. This is in collaboration with one of the foremost technology innovation and incubation center knowns as Start innovations hub.

In the words of Johnson Hanson ,the founder of the incubation center,

“It’s high time we encourage more women in our local communities to see the opportunities in the Tech industry and also take advantage of it”, he said.

Internet is an enabler, women’s participation in the ICT space bridges the gender gap. For women the world over, information and communication technologies (ICT) can be leveraged for personal security, better access to education and jobs, financial inclusion or to access basic healthcare information.
