“When I look at a person, I see a person – not a rank, not a class, not a title.” Criss Jami , this saying can be said to be apt to the political situation in the country as it pertains to the certificate issue of Senator Tunji Adeleke and Okoi Obla both of these political heavyweights have been immersed in certificate issue and with recommendation been passed on Obla and charging of Adeleke to court, the country awaits , the country watches as this case unfold and it would be the yardstick that impunity, importance of education and a reference point would be made.
Lately, the Senator Adeleke has been in the news ranging from certificate issue to other personal matters which the police is investigating and hasn’t made public. Mr. Frank Mba, the Police Force spokesman said “Senator Adeleke is currently in police custody. He was taken into custody in the evening of today 6th May 2019 in connection with ongoing criminal investigations touching on his person….Meanwhile, in the best tradition of natural justice and fair hearing; he has already been served with the relevant charge sheet containing his alleged offences in the presence of his Attorneys.”
Though, the party which Adeleke is in, The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has countered the statement saying that the Senator is being victimised based on the party affiliation and his certificate issue. In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, he said “This is part of the grand plot by the APC to coerce Adeleke to relinquish the mandate that was freely given to him by the people of Osun state, which was further established by the election petition tribunal.” He also cited that the Senator is being harassed based on examination malpractices. “The plot is to drag Adeleke before an ostensibly compromised magistrate court, over the same issues of alleged forged school testimonial that is already before the Federal High Court”, He added.
Okoi Obono-Obla,a chieftain of the ruling party also is in the same shoes with Adeleke, wearing the shoes of questionable certificate. Though, just like the former Minister Finance Kemi Adeosun, who was made to resign because of forged certificate! Okoi Obla has been in the news lately, not only in the mess, but unlike Adeleke who is heading to court, Obla is a free man. Pressures have been mounting on the presidency to ensure that what is good for the goose is awesome for the gander. The PDP has called for his trial based on forgery and impersonation. Obono-Obla, who is the senior special assistant to the president on prosecution, is alleged to be in possession of an “invalid” O’level result, according to findings by the House of Representatives ad hoc panel investigating the special presidential investigative panel for the recovery of public property (SPIP).
In the words of Criss Jami she said “Armed neutrality makes it much easier to detect hypocrisy”, we strongly believe that the same treatment should be meted to both who have defaulted. The presidency has demonstrated some sense of purpose by ensuring that Kemi Adeosun was exited, it was seen that her presence in the government was becoming a source of embarrassment not only to the presidency but to the nation. Just like Kemi, Obla has been on the radar lately and it has been said that the measure that is being used for Adeleke should be used for Obla. Not only that, folks in PDP has said that his Law Degree be withdrawn and his membership to the Nigerian Bar Association be removed and he should head to court, just like Adeleke.
As the country heads to May 29th for official swearing in of President Buhari for the second tem, the public is expecting that the hand used for Adeleke, Kemi should be used for Obla. As the presidency has demonstrated that he has zero tolerance to certificate forgery, the citizens of the country are watching keenly to know if Adeleke is that of morality or political witch hunting. “…it’s better in fact to be guilty of manslaughter than of fraud about what is fair and just.” Plato,
