SOUTH SOUTH TERM, NIGER DELTA AND THE IGBO QUESTION? (1)

0

To some Nigerians, the term Niger Delta connotes a political term to categorise the oil producing region. In their own view the term Niger Delta can be likened to an exclusive club of oil producing states that their membership should b benchmarked by platinum card holding far away from other gold and silver card states. While to some other Nigerians, the term Niger Delta can be categorized as a tribe or anything that is non Igbo in the southern Nigeria. These are the excusable ignorant set of Nigeria ,  through lots of propaganda and brainwashing, they have come to an “unempirical” conclusion that every other tribes in Nigeria are members of this Niger Delta tribes apart  from  Igbo. Another group of Nigerians is  the unintelligent or unexposed Nigerians that will always thinK that  Igbo are not members of this exclusive club and can never be found in such a region.

The term Niger Delta is always interchangeable mixed with the term South South ( an insult o the sensibilities of the educated an exposed minds ad geographers) in the whole Wide world, there is no term like South South and it can never be found in any of the cardinal points. According to Geographers ( https://www.geolounge.com/cardinal-directions-ordinal-directions/) Cardinal directions are the four main points of a compass: north, south, east, and west,  which are also known by the first letters: N,S,E, and W.  These four directions are also known as cardinal points.  A cardinal direction can also be referred to by first using the word “due”.  For example, the cardinal direction of the  north can also be referred to as due north.

Ordinal directions refer to the direction found at the point equally between each cardinal direction.  Ordinal directions are: northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW).  Ordinal directions are also known as inter-cardinal directions. But it is only in Nigeria that an aberration and anomaly of South South is seen and known, just like every other facet of national life.

Because we are talking of a geogrpahical zone/expression, we have to understand the meaning of  the term “delta” . According to National Geogrpahic Society.  Deltas are wetlands that form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water, such as an ocean, lake, or another river. Deltas can also empty into land, although this is less common. (https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/delta/)

According to Wikipedia ( Which is not accepted in any intellectaul subbmissions, debate  and postulation) describes Niger Delta as The Niger Delta is the delta of the Niger River sitting directly on the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean in Nigeria. It is typically considered to be located within nine coastal southern Nigerian states, which include: all six states from the South South geopolitical zone, one state (Ondo) from South West geopolitical zone and two states (Abia and Imo) from South East geopolitical zone. Of all the states that the region covers, only Cross River is not an oil-producing state. We have various types of deltas in Africa ,namely:  Niger Inland Delta‎  Niger River Delta‎ , Nile Delta , Okavango Delta and so forth

Having described the term NIGER DELTA And the aberration and oddness of the term SOUTH SOUTH, we can finally arrive to a conclusion that NIGER DELTA isn’t a tribe nor in exclusive preserve of any tribe in Nigeria. In short Niger Delta spans from Cross River( though removed for political reasons ) to Imo state and spans from the South East to Bayelsa, Delta, Ondo and Edo( reason of having Edo State  amongst the state isn’t clear) River Niger, Ouémé River, Imo River, Oguta Lake, Orashi River, Obuaku,  Okpara River, Escravos River, Ona River (Awna River and so many more are rivers that empties into the Atlantic makes up the term Niger Delta. (A distributary of Niger River to the delta via the Atlantic).

Now are Igbo indigenous to the Niger Delta or the ubiquitous South South region? The answer is a capital YES . Though, for the sake of tokenism and crumbs mentality of some Igbo clans via divide and rule of 1968 –1975, some Igbo clans will want the world assume that they are not Igbo due to oil politics. But, the is a saying that Once it squats, quacks and walks somehow, it is a duck!  So, no matter the political correctness  or oil politics, the Ijaw, Ibibio/ Efiks, Urhobo/Isoko can identify the Igbo man, be it the Amechi and he of Ikwerre extraction to the Emeka and Obi from Agbor/Igbanke extraction.
