Shehu Shaghari, one of the finest politician that ever came out from the Northern Nigeria, as the first democratically elected president , truncated by military, he has gone on retirement , very quiet retirement died at the prime age of 93! On the flip side, Ike Ekweremadu, one of the few finest politician that the South East and Southern Nigeria has ever produced took time out to commiserate with the family and the nation at large over the demise of an icon of democracy.

In his social media pages, the Deputy Senate President said that
“I received with a heavy heart the news of the passing on of the Second Republic President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.”

He continued “He was a democrat by nature, orientation, and conviction. He was a patriot par excellence, a detribalised elder statesman, bridge-builder, servant-leader, and an epitome of humility, who served the nation and humanity most creditably. In and out of office, Alhaji Shagari clothed the Office of the President with decorum and social grace.”
On the quest and the need to build a better country, Ike Ekweremadu added that

“Although he lived to a ripe age of 93, his wealth of experience and treasury of wisdom would still have been most invaluable in our quest to build the Nigeria of our dreams. But as human, we must submit to the overarching will of God.”

On the demise and heartfelt condolences sent to Sokoto State and the family, Ekweremadu added that

“I, therefore, send heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and good people of Sokoto State, President Muhammadu Buhari, and the nation over this irreparable loss.May God grant his soul eternal repose. Amen.”

The death of Shagari has been described as a national tragedy and loss and also putting the country in mourning. The Senate president used the opportunity to call for retrospect on Nigerian situation and the need to allow peace reign amongst various sections of the country .
