Electricity is one of the key areas any government must look into, some privatize it, while others have electricity generation and distribution under government. In Owerri the capital Imo State the electricity distribution is under Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) a private setup in far away Enugu state. This has made the company not to be in touch with the city most times with critical decision taken on Enugu City. This situation that has resulted in skeletal supplies and lack of maintenance.
Njiribako Street, a popular street in Owerri city that is adjacent School Road and Christ Church Road has been in total darkness for up to a month courtesy of electricity distribution companies and the government nonchalant attitude to the plight of the residents. With fallen poles that has high tension wires on the ground, residents of the street are living everyday with fear of calamity and danger that might happen.
Caused by breeze that made the concrete like to break and also pulling the high tension down, the street is in darkness and business grounded for up to two weeks with attendant loses that is in millions. Businesses are mandated to close and residents having a difficult time getting in and out of their houses . Parents are scared to let their kids out.
According to residents of the street known simply as Eberechi said that ” We are wondering how the EEDC and government of Rochas have found it extremely difficult to do business here and this is affecting our quality of life”she concluded .
Taking to our correspondent, Innocent said that ” it’s unfortunate that this has happened, we do not know why it is difficult to change an electric pole. We have been in darkness and people not allowed to open their shops. This isn’t the way a modern city and serious government should be acting ” he retorted.
Njiribako is one of the major streets that has been in darkness for a month in the heart of a city that is trying to position herself as a tourist destination. With series of businesses and residential apartment,businesses has lost so much in terms of revenue and security at all time low! Since the rainfall that happened few weeks to a month ago that saw Township School roofs blown away and a couple of electric poles broken and not far from the APC rally venue, The electricity distribution company has forgotten them and the Rochas seems to be a bit busy with 2019 elections. As of the time of this report, the street area not only the street, about a couple of streets are in darkness.
