The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior has unveiled seven{7} marriage registries. The ministry has been given the responsibility to grant licenses to qualified places of worship as well as LGAs that compiled with the provisions of the Act (Sections 4(2) & (5) of the Marriage Act)

The Federal Marriage Registry is authorized by the Ministry of interior as the only tier of government permitted by the constitution to regulate and conduct marriages because the formation of statutory marriages was within the exclusive legislative list as such they have the right as regulatory body for the conduct of statutory marriages and the issuance of marriage certificates.

Various marriage services are carried out here for all couples. This includes; the Registration of Ordinary and Special marriages, the issuance and re-issue of secured Federal marriage certificates, booking of marriage date, change of venue, application for certified true copy of document, place of worship licensing, and many other services

How to register a marriage in Nigeria

Step 1 Online Registration

1.To register for marriage in Nigeria, applicant need to visit online portal : ecitibiz.interior.gov.ng

2 Click the marriage column to Become legally Married and recognized and obtain a Federal Marriage Certificate.

3. Tap New User Registration
4, Enter all you information

Requirement for Husband:

1.Birth Certificate or Declaration of Age.
2.Passport Photograph.
3.Indigene Letter/Letter of Identification from State of Origin (Nigerians only).
4.Sworn Affidavit of Bachelorhood from a Law Court/ Bachelorhood Certificate (if bachelor).

5.Affidavit of Marriage (if already married).
6.Evidence of Divorce – Decree 90 and Decree Absolute (if divorced).
7.Death certificate of Previous Wife (if a widower).
8.Evidence of Annulment from Court (if previous marriage was annulled).

9.Sworn Affidavit of Single with Child/Children (if single with child/children).
10.Data Page of International Passport (if living abroad).
11.Arrival Passport Stamp Page (if living abroad).
12. Residence Permit (if living abroad).

 

Requirement for Wife:

a. Birth Certificate or Declaration of Age.
b.Passport Photograph.
c.Indigene Letter/Letter of Identification from State of Origin (Nigerians only).
d.Sworn Affidavit of Spinsterhood from a Law Court/ Spinsterhood Certificate (if spinster).
e.Affidavit of Marriage (if already married).

f.Evidence of Divorce – Decree 90 and Decree Absolute (if divorced).
g.Death certificate of Previous Husband (if a widow).
h.Evidence of Annulment from Court (if previous marriage was annulled).
i.Sworn Affidavit of Single with Child/Children (if single with child/children).

Step 2. Oath Taking

1.Return to the Registry on the selected Date of Interview.
2.You are required to provide one witness each on the wedding day from both parties (please note it’s not genders specific).
3. You are expected to present 2 Rings (male and female) or a Bible/Quran as the case may be.

1.Passport Photograph of Husband and Wife.
2. Evidence of Marriage at LGA Marriage Registry.
3.Birth Certificate/Declaration of Age of Husband and Wife.
4.Witness Signature (2 witnesses)

In case of Loss of Marriage Certificate:
