I really enjoyed it, not what i was expecting. All I can say is, thank you Miss Nnaji for revealing this part of Nigeria to the world. It’s like a message we have been trying to pass to the world, but could not find a proper means to do this. This is beautiful, this is the Nigeria I know, love and I am proud of”, said Chiamaka Ekwe. This is one of the reviews that the movie got recently.
Lionheart, a movie in the lips of people, apart from the amazing nature of the movie, the movie has changed the way we see Nigerian movie industry what can be termed “Nollywood” forever. Genevieve Nnaji has demonstrated class and above all cemented and stamped her reputation as not only an actress but a business woman of a kind. With Netflix collaboration, Lionheart has roared and the world has heard.
Reviews after reviews, the movie has gotten applaud overseas and locally ,some reviews are also scathing. Lionheart is not only groundbreaking, it’s a lighthearted, feel-good movie .
Lionheart is a 2018 Nigerian movie produced by Chinny Onwugbenu and directed by Genevieve Nnaji. It stars Pete Edochie, Genevieve Nnaji, and Nkem Owoh. It was acquired by Netflix on 7 September 2018,making it the first Netflix original film produced in Nigeria. Lionheart premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The movie was Nnaji’s directorial debut as well as Peter Okoye’s acting debut, said Wikipedia intro of the movie.
The movie just like the legendary THINGS FALL APART, By Chinua Achebe, the movie LIONHEART dwelt on the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria. The movie told the story of the importance of a female child. Africa is a continent that is saddled with the notion of a male child is superior or better, but the movie talks about how the female child can be of importance. Just like Achebe, Genevieve is an Igbo lady and as it is and always is, a writer or artistic expressions always depict the writer’s environment or upbringing and “Lionheart” showcases the Igbo Culture and language to the world .
The setting of the movie was done in the Igbo capital city of Enugu, the reviews have been coming in and applauds also.
Maria Sista said “I admit this is my first Nigerian film, sorry I am more in love with your fashion and music but now I’m just happy to watch your films!I feel so proud and so overwhelmed with satisfaction the film gave me personally!! I Really loved the authentic actors and breathing space of each story and character beat… Felt like it flowed so well for me, I journeyed with with Adaeze and she was so relatable!!Pete and Nkem were amazing!!
LionHeart “ the movie Genevieve’s Directorial debut . First, this movie gives you all kinds of vibes , ranging from family values , business oriented mindsets , and above all the power of determination.
In the words of Curtis Curney Itoka, “ LionHeart “ the movie Genevieve’s Directorial debut . First, this movie gives you all kinds of vibes , ranging from family values , business oriented mindsets , and above all the power of determination. The cinematography was so great and amazing at some point I was like, this isn’t the everyday Nollywood film . This movie story line is authentic and it’s not far fetch from the reality women are faced with in our African Job Market .”
“A great story with excellent values and message. Great delivery on acting for the cast. Great Cast (spotted some old Nollywood actors, which was really pleasant) and crew. Impressive cultural display and representation, also love the merger between the two companies, tribes and the emerging (opened ended) relationship between Adaeze and Hamza”,Kwaghdoo Atsehe.
“I really enjoyed watching Lionheart. As a Nigerian living abroad, Nollywood movies always make me feel nostalgic and remind me of home. Although I love Nigerian films, the sound and image quality is often very poor and consequently tends to irritate me. However, Lionheart was extremely well made and it was so lovely seeing a well made Nollywood movie that just feels authentic. They weren’t trying to imitate US culture in order to make a good film. It was also a pleasant surprise to see the classic Nollywood actors, amongst some new faces. Brilliant storytelling and job well done. I’m really proud of this movie and I hope those involved are proud of their great work too. 5 stars!”A. Anita, a Nigerian in diaspora.
What the movie got going apart from the originality of the movie is the projection of African language and culture , in this case Igbo. The movie is a clear departure from the every busy Lagos city setting to that of a serene city of Enugu ! It was a clear deprture from the norm. Also showcasing Nigerian technology was imminent, the movie brought to the global recognition Nigerian flagship car company Innosson cars via covert advert.
Said to be bought to the tune of millions of USA dollars, one thing that we can’t take away is that Genevieve has raised the bar and the movie would be the benchmark other Nigerian movies would be measured .
