Electronic Voting, Can It Eliminate Thuggery, Intimidation & Violence?

Could electronic voting be a workable solution to eliminating thuggery, victimization and intimidation in future Nigerian elections?

Pros: people can vote from the comfort of their homes, using any technology that suits them. Phone-IVR, USSD, web access etc. Cheaper cost of elections because equipment, logistics, monitoring and enforcement will be greatly reduced. Reduction in mortality of Resident Electoral Commissioners, staff and volunteers. Declaration of results can be smoother and quicker.

Cons: Trust in the inviolability of the system, the political will. The old order will not let go. Electronic and unique National ID is WIP, adequate network infrastructure and reliability, Human Resource to handle such complexity, Universal access to ensure no one is disenfranchised, Cyber-threats, the hackers and the script-kiddies will be the new thugs and bullies.

When the Chips are down, it might be easier to swallow the leadership of a multitude of knowledgeable but loud kids (Just imagine the two leading kiddies in Kogi State being able to write polymorphic classes in Java and C++)

It will be safer being led by a recluse of a script kid, than some scar-face with a twisted mind and a foul onion breathe to boot.
