RESPONSIBLE or RESPONSIVE LEADERSHIP

“Daddy, the fuel has finished in the generator” says 15-year-old Kevin to his father who is furious that power went off while he was watching his favourite TV show. “Jane where did you keep the salt in this your kitchen? I can’t find it anywhere” says Priscilla to her best friend who is sick and called her in to help prepare something she could eat before taking her drugs. We see in both scenarios above that there was a need that could not be satisfied because there was a lack of the material needed to carry out the ongoing process, this means that the availability of something little can bring about a halt to something greater going forward.

There are basically two major postures that can be held when in a position of leadership; being responsive and being responsible.

When it is said a leadership is positioned as being responsive, what that means in essence is that the leadership in question does not of its own accord chart new paths, or even seek to improve in any area, but waits until a situation arises before they deploy resources to the troubled area so as to bring about a solution.

Responsive leadership does not place priority on being proactive as regards solution driving, rather it waits for situations to arise before it seeks to proffer solution to it without thinking ahead. In summary responsive leaderships rarely are at the forefront of any innovation.

On the other hand, when we say a leadership is positioned to be responsible, it means that such a leadership structure is set up to accept full responsibility for both its actions, inactions, and the consequences that come with each.

This attitude puts the organisation with such leadership structure on a pedestal to not just discover solutions to problems on ground, but to anticipate future problems before they arise and set measures in place to tackle them when they materialise.

Leadership is responsibility. Leadership is influencing people to follow you to a desired destination. Leadership anticipates. Leadership creates new paths. Leadership travels uncharted waters.

Are you ready to lead responsibly?
